About KAYS

Ware County and the City of Waycross established their first airport in 1930, beginning as a simple sod airfield. In 1941, under the National Defense Program, the Civil Aeronautics Authority expanded the site significantly—adding paved runways and modern facilities to support military operations during World War II. The site became known as the Waycross Army Airfield Base, playing a crucial role in training both tactical and service squadrons.

As a sub-base of Hunter Army Airfield and later Drew Field in Tampa, the Waycross Army Airfield featured three 5,000-foot runways, troop housing, a hospital, and recreational facilities. A variety of aircraft were stationed there, including the Vultee A-31 Vengeance, Douglas A-24 Banshee, Bell P-39 Airacobra, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, and the legendary North American P-51 Mustang. Fighter-bomber pilots and service groups trained extensively here in preparation for overseas deployment.

The base also housed German prisoners of war, many of whom served as mechanics. By October 1945, with the war concluded and the demand for military training reduced, the base officially closed.

Following its closure, the airport was returned to local control. The original 3,000-acre site was gradually repurposed, with much of the land sold for industrial development. In the 1950s, a portion of the former recreation area was transformed into Barnesville, a spring training facility for the Milwaukee Braves, who later became the Atlanta Braves.

From 1948 to 1969, the airport was serviced by Eastern Airlines, followed by three additional carriers until 1984. After commercial service ceased, the airport shifted its focus to sport and recreational aviation, continuing its legacy as a hub for regional flying activity.
